Almost all of the major security software vendors have jumped onto the smartphone bandwagon, including industry heavyweight Symantec. Just like its desktop security suite, the Norton Mobile Security app for Android is one of the most comprehensive available, covering not only the expected virus scanning and blocking of fraudulent/ malicious websites, but also anti-theft features, and the ability to block calls and text messages from particular numbers.
The anti-theft security features are similar to the ones found in Find My iPhone, but they’re slightly more sophisticated – in theory. As well as providing an online portal where you can remotely lock your phone, locate it on a map, and send a custom message, you can remotely trigger your phone’s front-facing camera (assuming it has one) to take a photo of the thief. You can also trigger the anti-theft features by sending a specifically-worded SMS to your phone, and the remote tracking command returns a link to the Google Maps location of your device as well as a text telling you approximately how far away your phone is from your current location. But Symantec doesn’t seem to have factored in the possibility of having a task manager built into Android’s multi-tasking window, as the Samsung Galaxy S II does.
When the phone is remotely locked, there’s a half-second window in which you can launch the task manager before the remote lock screen appears again, and that’s all we needed to hit the “Exit all” option in the task manager, effectively killing Norton Mobile Security. Like Find my iPhone, Norton Mobile Security is also deactivated when you remove the SIM card, and while it includes a device lock that requires you to enter a password whenever the SIM card is changed, this is once again easily circumvented using the task manager.

The popular community rating service for local businesses – big in theUnited States and Europe – has finally launched inAustralia, providing yet another outlet for users to comment on everything from restaurants and bars to accountants and dry cleaners. It incorporates elements of Layar and Foursquare as well, letting you “see” ratings of businesses using an augmented reality view through the camera, check into particular locations, earn badges and take advantage of special deals and offers in the area.
Obviously it’ll take a while for the reviews to start building up, but within a few days of the service’s launch there were a thousand businesses reviewed in the eastern suburbs ofSydney(it threw up an error once we tried to scroll past that number). You can browse through listings by category or search for particular things like frozen yogurt, electricians and hairdressers, although not all of the remits will have ratings und user reviews.
